Tom Kitayama Elementary School Awareness Project
Project Summary
Project Leader: Cherie Barnecut, elementary school teacher at Tom Kitayama Elementary School in Union City, California (Twitter account is twitter/nvbound)
Type of Local Project: Elementary school classroom project to raise awareness of Project Meet Me Halfway and raise funds for HomeBase Youth Services (HBYS), an Phoenix organization that supports teens
Time Commitment: Ongoing; can be done in a short amount of time or keep it developing.
Cost of Event: None, possibly materials for signs
Success of Event: $80 of funds sent to HBYS so far, continuing to collect for duration of Jimmy Wayne's walk. Lifetime of memories for students!
Participation: Twenty students and their families
Unique elements: School setting, connections made with the community and service learning for students, and radio interview with the students with NIXA country in Nashville, TN
Is this an event that could be replicated easily: Yes, by those working with youth in school, church, youth setting. Very rewarding!
